PENELA: This picturesque town, with its medieval castle, has all modern-day amenities including, banks, supermarkets, restaurants and cafes, swimming pool, cinema, theatre, pharmacy and health centre. There is a traditional farmer´s market every Thursday.
The Castle of Penela is a Listed Monument. Its construction started in the 11th century, although what you can see of the Castle these days only goes back to the 14th and 15th centuries. Inside is the Church of St Michael, which was originally built in the 12th century.
A short drive from Penela into the Serra do Espinhal can be found the Natural Dams of Louçainha. The freshness, the green hillside scenery, the serenity and peace of this place, make it one of the most attractive natural areas in the Municipality. Here, you will find natural pools, a picnic area and a panoramic restaurant.
The Serra do Espinhal offers a unique landscape to the traveller. From here you can see the beautiful town of Penela, topped by the Castle. Depending on the time of year, the hills are covered by a palette of colours, from green to blue, to pink and yellow, thanks to the diversity of plants and trees that thrive there.
COIMBRA: In terms of historic significance and romantic beauty, Coimbra is second only to Lisbon and Oporto. Its ancient buildings cling to the side of the hill that rises above the curves of the River Mondego, the ornate buildings of the famous University of Coimbra are its crowning glory. Coimbra has much else to offer the visitor not least an array of medieval churches. Accessing the old part of the city through the Arco de Almedina, we find two cathedrals known as Sé Velha (old) and Sé Nova (new) referring to their respective ages, and though the ‘new’ one dates back to the 17th century its senior was founded in 1170.
FIGUEIRA DA FOZ: The coastal town of Figueira da Foz is a popular holiday resort with a 16th Century fort. To the northeast is the small charming town of Santa Comba Dão that dates from the 10th Century. It is known more for its birthplace of both Alves Mateus and Oliveira Salazar, the first being a renown preacher and the second the 20th Century ruler of Portugal. The area is mainly residential and contains typical examples of homes through the ages besides a 15th Century church.
TOMAR: Tomar lies in the most fertile region of Portugal. Under the modern city lie the Roman cities of Nabantia and Sellium. After the conquest of the region from the Moors in the Portuguese Reconquista, the land was granted in 1159 as a fief to the Order of the Knights Templar. Its then Grand Master in Portugal, and Tomar's somewhat mythical founder, Gualdim Pais, laid in 1160 the first stone of the Castle and Monastery that would become the Head-Quarters of the Order in Portugal. This magnificent ensemble of 12th- to 16th-century architecture and art, it is the main monument of the city and one of the most important in Portugal. It was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1983.
